Man impales arm on metal railings
Christmas Day started in unfortunate fashion for one visitor to Peterborough city centre after he was badly hurt when his arm became impaled on metal railings.
The emergency services were called out to Broadway in the early hours of Sunday morning to help a managed around 20 who had suffered serious injuries.
The man needed his arm freed from the railings after the incident which led to him being taken to Peterborough City Hospital in an ambulance.
The East of England Ambulance Service were called out at just before 1am on Christmas Day.
They sent a rapid response vehicle, which arrived at the scene in approximately seven minutes, and an ambulance.
Magpas Air Ambulance was also called to attend, and at 1.26am Dr Ed Barnard and paramedic Alex Pearce arrived via a Magpas rapid response BMW.
The Magpas medical team gave the patient advanced pain relief and sedated him – providing him with A& E level care there and then.
The team then worked closely with a Cambridgeshire Fire And Rescue Service crew to remove the man safely from the railing.
They then accompanied the patient in the ambulance to the hospital in Bretton where upon arrival he was in a stable condition.
The fire service said it was called at 1.03 am to go to Cattle Market Road.
One crew from Dogs thorpe attended with firefighters using cutting equipment to cut the railing before leaving the patient in the care of the ambulance service.
The fire crew was back at its station by 2.10am.
Cambridgeshire police said it was not called to the incident.
