Cam­paigner handed British Em­pire Medal

Ten­nis world num­ber one Andy Mur­ray and quadru­ple Olympic cham­pion ath­lete Mo Far­rah have been given knight­hoods.

Dou­ble world cham­pion hep­tath­lete and Lon­don 2 01 2 c ham­pion J e s s i c a En­nis-Hill has been made a dame.

Other high pro­file stars in the­list in­cludePosh­spiceVic- to­ria Beck­ham, who is given an OBE, co­me­dian Ken Dodd has been given a knight­hood.

RayDavies, singer and­gui­tarist in The Kinks has been given a knight­hood, while for­mer news­reader An­gela Rip­pon has been given a CBE.

Ac­tress Pa­tri­cia Rout­ledge has been made a dame, and singer Marty Wilde has been given an MBE. A com­mu­nity cham­pion and prominent cam­paigner has won a British Em­pire Medal in thetra­di­tion­alNewYear’sHonours.

Bri­anGas­coyne, chair­manof the The Mill­field and New Eng­land Re­gen­er­a­tion Part­ner­ship (MANERP) and the Holo­caust Me­mo­rial Day Com­mit­tee, said it was“abito­fashock” tofind­out hehad­been­honoured.

The 68-year-old of Hill­side Walk, Yax­ley, who used to be the land­lord for sev­eral city pubs, said­he­wastold­about­themedala fort­nigh­tago­duringa­phonecall fromtheCabi­net Of­fice.

“Youhave­to­think­some­oneis car­ryin­gouta­joke, butwhen­the let­ter­ar­rivedthat­was­con­fir­ma­tion,” he­said.

“I’mveryproud­ofthe­fact­that I will bere­ceiv­ing an­honour.

“It’s av­eryn­ice­feelin­gandI’m grate­ful to who­ever nom­i­nated me.

“Ev­ery­thing I do is part of a tea­mandI’mgrate­ful­forthep­eo­ple whowork­withme.”

Brian was pre­vi­ously editor of Out and About News, a pub­li­ca­tion for ho­mo­sex­ual peo­ple, and sec­re­tary of the Peter­bor­ough Hack­ney Car­riages Driv­ing Fed­er­a­tion.

Apromi­nent­cam­paign­er­for les­bian, gay, bi­sex­ual, and­trans­gen­der (LGBT) rights, he is cur­rent­ly­onac­ity-wideHateCrime Task and Fin­ish Group, and he also served as land­lord at The Crown, the Cross Keys, the Car­pen­ter­sArm­sandtheBoysHead.

Brian will re­ceive his medal lo­cally from the Lord Lieu­tenan­toradeputy­be­fore­at­tend­ing a Buck­ing­ham Palace sum­mer gar­den party.

He said: “You must look for­ward­to­some­thing­like that.”

Join­ing Brian at the gar­den party will be­wife San­dra.

Asked about her re­ac­tion to his award, Brian said: “My wife comes from Brix­ton and she was rather ex­pres­sive in what she said!

“Sheis very happy.”
