Campaigner handed British Empire Medal
Tennis world number one Andy Murray and quadruple Olympic champion athlete Mo Farrah have been given knighthoods.
Double world champion heptathlete and London 2 01 2 c hampion J e s s i c a Ennis-Hill has been made a dame.
Other high profile stars in thelist includePoshspiceVic- toria Beckham, who is given an OBE, comedian Ken Dodd has been given a knighthood.
RayDavies, singer andguitarist in The Kinks has been given a knighthood, while former newsreader Angela Rippon has been given a CBE.
Actress Patricia Routledge has been made a dame, and singer Marty Wilde has been given an MBE. A community champion and prominent campaigner has won a British Empire Medal in thetraditionalNewYear’sHonours.
BrianGascoyne, chairmanof the The Millfield and New England Regeneration Partnership (MANERP) and the Holocaust Memorial Day Committee, said it was“abitofashock” tofindout hehadbeenhonoured.
The 68-year-old of Hillside Walk, Yaxley, who used to be the landlord for several city pubs, saidhewastoldaboutthemedala fortnightagoduringaphonecall fromtheCabinet Office.
“Youhavetothinksomeoneis carryingoutajoke, butwhenthe letterarrivedthatwasconfirmation,” hesaid.
“I’mveryproudofthefactthat I will bereceiving anhonour.
“It’s averynicefeelingandI’m grateful to whoever nominated me.
“Everything I do is part of a teamandI’mgratefulforthepeople whoworkwithme.”
Brian was previously editor of Out and About News, a publication for homosexual people, and secretary of the Peterborough Hackney Carriages Driving Federation.
Aprominentcampaignerfor lesbian, gay, bisexual, andtransgender (LGBT) rights, he is currentlyonacity-wideHateCrime Task and Finish Group, and he also served as landlord at The Crown, the Cross Keys, the CarpentersArmsandtheBoysHead.
Brian will receive his medal locally from the Lord Lieutenantoradeputybeforeattending a Buckingham Palace summer garden party.
He said: “You must look forwardtosomethinglike that.”
Joining Brian at the garden party will bewife Sandra.
Asked about her reaction to his award, Brian said: “My wife comes from Brixton and she was rather expressive in what she said!
“Sheis very happy.”
