Online retailer Amazon has made 500 seasonal jobs permanent at its Peterborough base. The staff were recruited for the pre- Christmas rush but have now secured the firm’s ‘blue badge’ status.

Hundreds of seasonal staff at online retailer Amazon in Peterborough have been given permanent jobs. Bosses at Amazon’s fulfilment centre, in Kingston Park, Fletton, have given permanent jobs to more than 500 staff who had been recruited for work over Christmas last year.

A spokesman said: “We are pleased to say more than 500 people who worked for us in the Peterborough Fulfilment Centre on a temporary basis last year and in the run up to Christmas have been moving into permanent full time roles.”

Securing blue badge status at Amazon by becoming part of the 1,500 full-time staff is highly sought after.

Valentinova Dimova said: “I love my job and have been working really hard to get a blue badge.”

Jorge Peres said: “I used to work in a restaurant, so settled working hours and a working pattern that allows overtime is great.”

Kim Brothers said: “I am59 and a former council worker. I am glad that Amazon have recognised my older person skills set.”

Chris Hassan added: “This is a new city and a new job for me which is going to make it a lot more comfortable for my family”

Naitullah Zadran said: “This job is going to make it a lot easier to get a mortgage.”

The action is a welcome employment boost for Peterborough. New figures from the Office for National Statistics show that the number of people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance or Universal Credit rose last month to 1,645 people - up from 1,485 a month earlier.
