An outstanding charity success

-

On Sunday, March 19, an outstandingly success joint charity initiative saw a total of 53 cats neutered free of charge. Vets and vet nurses from different practices across the area, along with a team of volunteers from Cats Protection and the RSPCA, came together and gave up their day of rest, volunteering their time for free to help cat owners in the local community.

Local vet practice Vets 4 pets opened their doors offering their practice and services for the day. To run a day like this takes an enormous amount of organisation and watertight teamwork on the day from all parties involved.

Typically, there were a handful of no shows which would have made our num- bers closer to 70, but 53 responsible cat owners are now worry free from the impending kitten season that is just around the corner.

Just one unneutered cat could be responsible for in the region of 30 plus more within a year. A day like Sunday potentially saved over 1000, or even more, unwanted kittens.

We cannot stress enough how important neutering is. No one wants to see kittens haveave kittens kittens, a recurring situation that we see year in, year out. Ninety per cent of cats with kittens coming into our branch are aged between 9-12 months old. Many of these young mums can struggle, requiring veterinary assistance when birth- ing ing, rejecting their litter or poor milk being produced etc.

Cats Protection recommends that cat owners neuter their cat at four months of age. It is a fact that neutered cats live longer, healthier, lives and it is the most hu- mane way to stop unwanted pregnancies.

Neutering will also help prevent your cat straying, fighting, and behaviour issues such as spraying, a pungent foul smell that is almost near impossible to get rid of.

Please be kind to your be- loved pet cat or kitten and get them neutered. Cats Protection offers financial assisted neutering for people on benefits or low income. It takes just one phone call to see if we can help you! Act responsibly and give our helpline a call on 0345 371 2750.
