Igot some great memories about the picture of Elmer’s newsagents which featured in Looking Back a few weeks ago

Ninety-nine years old Henry Jeffrey got in touch to tell me how he did a paper round from the shop which was in Millfield Road, Peterborough.

Henry, who lives in Dogsthorpe, recalled: “I used to be in at 6am to sort the papers out for the round when I was a 12-year-old in 1929.

Henry added he was paid the princely sum of three shillings.

There was a shop next door owned by Mr Blackman who sold watches and jewellery.

And nearby in Lincoln Road was a tram depot which is now a bus depot.

Thank you Henry for sharing your memories.

Thursday, May 2, 1974 was the day after the night before for Posh fans.

In front of 17,5o0 fans Posh clinched the Division 4 title and the ET had a front page picture of manager Noel Cantwell, coach John Barnwell and skipper John Cozens toasting the triumph.

The lead story that day was about farmers who were angry at Peterborough Development Corporation ‘slapping’ a compulsory purchase order 0n 640 acres of mostly agricultural land at Werrington.

Plans for the area included 3,000 new homes, four schools and a shopping centre.

Also on the front page was boxing legend Henry Cooper.

The ET reported Perkins had signed up the muchloved boxer to “put a mighty punch’’ into the firm’s recruitment drive.

In other news a former county councillor lost a court claim for damages against Peterborough City Council after he had fallen on the marble steps at the Town Hall.
