Hat-trick seeking county hopefuls reach the end of the road at Parkway
Fve players will be bidding for title hat-tricks at the Northants Bowling Federation finals at Parkway on Sunday (10am start).
Ketton’s Shirley Suffling goes in the senior singles, mixed pairs and ladies pairs, the latter with club-mate Chris Ford, who also has both main singles titles in her sights – twobowl and four-bowl.
Parkway’s Neil Wright bids for glory in the two-bowl singles and pairs, with Howard Shipp, and teams up with Sarah Newson in the mixed pairs, where they meet the defending champions, Chris Morton and Simon Law, also from Parkway.
Adam Warrington (Blackstones) chases two singles titles and joins Jonathan Earl and Martyn Dolby in the twobowl triples.
Stephen Harris (Blackstones) defends both the under 25 singles and pairs titles; Malcolm Squires (City of Peterborough) hopes to retain the men’s secretary singles; the Newson family – Jeff, Val and daughter Sarah put their mixed triples title on the line, while Linda Darani defends the women’s secretary singles.
The winners will represent the county at next month’s national finals at Skegness.
HUNTS
Former England international Catherine Popple will be representing Hunts in four of the five mainstream Bowls England national championships at Leamington next month after winning through in the two-bowl singles, pairs, triples and fours.
Tristan Morton (Parkway), will be there in pairs, triples and four-bowl singles.
The county finals are being hosted by the Holywell-cumNeedingworth club on July 30.
NORTHANTS COUNTY
Both the Northants Women’s Bowling Federation county teams returned pointless from the long trip to Suffolk.
The Donald Steward Trophy team went down 68-132, the rinks of county president Rita Mace and Chris Ford losing by just four and two shots respectively.
The margin of defeat for Northants in the Silver Jubilee Vase was marginally better at 79-135, the rinks of Viv Hempsall and Liz Barr losing by five and four shots respectively.
DISABILITY BOWLS
Local bowler Mike Robertson has boosted his chances of making England’s Commonwealth Games disabled team by winning the Disability Bowls England Open Singles title at Leamington at the first time of asking.
The Parkway player, who was born without a left arm, has already been in outstanding form for England when they won the international series earlier this year.
After playing more than 60 ends of bowls at Leamington to win the title, he then dashed to Wellingborough to help his Parkway club reach the last 32 of the national club two fours.
NATIONAL CLUB
Parkway are through to the sixth round of the Bowls England national club two fours competition following a 4842 victory away to Wellingborough.
They now face a trip to Coventry and the Avenue club for a place in the last 16.
