Highways make roadworks pledge
Highways England have vowed a new roadworks scheme will not cause the traffic congestion seen last month.
The new scheme will see work carried out around junction 17 of the A1(M) as part of the expansion of the Peterborough Gateway Business Park.
Last month works on the same junction caused gridlock across the city.
The new scheme will start on Thursday, August 3, and last until November, with much of the work being done overnight. There will also be temporary speed limits and lane closures during the programme, which will also affect the Fletton Parkway.
Highways England Capital Delivery Team Leader, Aran Nugent, said: “We’re very clear that there can be no repeat of the disruption that drivers suffered last time there were road works at junction 17 of the A1(M). We’ve looked closely at what happened then and we are doing everything we can to make sure that the work happening now will cause minimal disruption for drivers.”
Mr Nugent said there would be plenty of signage advertising the works - and they would be lifted for major events, including bonfire night.
North West Cambridgeshire MP Shailesh Vara, who raised previous congestion problems in Parliament, said he was confident lessons had been learned from last month’s ‘debacle.’
He said he had arranged a meeting with the Chief Executive and Regional Operations Director of Highways England to discuss last month’s works - and the chaos that had resulted.
He said: “I am encouraged by the collaboration between Highways England and the local councils and will be monitoring the situation closely to ensure lessons have been learnt.”
