Robinson-Young is Myles better than the rest
City of Peterborough Swimming Club (COPS) made a flying start to the British Championships in Sheffield on Tuesday, winning a gold medal on day one.
Myles Robinson-Young (15) touched first in the final of the men’s 15 years 400m freestyle in a rapid personal best time of 4:03.69, finishing three seconds clear of silver medallist Jacob Davies from Birmingham.
Robinson-Young won his heat in the morning in 4:06.87.
He said aterwards: “Going into the final I felt prepared but the nerves were there. But the nerves were positive not negative which helped me during my race.
“While I was swimming I thought to myself about how I needed to keep my head down and focus on hitting that final wall as fast as possible. Yes I was watching my opponent which I shouldn’t have done but I think it helped me pace my race well which allowed me to go on and win the gold.
“When I finished I looked up to the timing board and saw my name was first. It felt unrealistic but I was overjoyed with my performance.”
COPS had four other finalists on day one and looked to have claimed a second gold in the women’s 15 years 400m individual medley when Amelia Monaghan smashed the field.
Unfortunately the joy in the COPS camp was short-lived as Monaghan was disqualified.
Elsewhere Jamie Scholes finished fourth in the men’s 17-18 years 400m freestyle final and seventh in the 50m backstroke final, Mia Leech was fourth in the women’s 15 years 400m individual medley final, and Chloe Hannam was fifth in the women’s 19 years 400m individual medley final.
The 2017 British Championships take place across six days at Ponds Forge and COPS have 15 swimmers in action.
COPS will also be well represented in the English Championships, which take place at Ponds Forge from August 2-6.
