Bellwether Wines, of Eagle Business Park, Falcon Way, Yaxley saw its Bernard-Massard’s Cuvee de L’Ecusson Brut excel at a prestigious awards ceremony.

The sparkling wine, which is stocked exclusively by Bellwether, was one of just 34 to receive Platinum Best in Show - the highest accolade at the Decanter World Wine Awards.

Warren Ball, commercial director at Bellwether Wines, which is a subsidiary of Oakham Ales, of Maxwell Road, Peterborough, said: “Every wine entered into a category was tasted ‘blind’ by the world’s best palates.

“This is a great achievement for Bernard-Massard and to receive this recognition reinforces the exceptional quality of this wine.

“With 17,299 wines taking part in the awards, to take a Platinum Best in Show is a fantastic achievement - especially as it was the first time Bernard-Massard has taken part in the awards.”

The wine was first produced in 1971 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Bernard-Massard winery.

It produces about one million bottles each year.

The Bernard-Massard label is run by the third and fourth generations of the family and it has invested in ex- pertise and equipment while acquiring vineyards in Luxembourg.

The Cuvee de L’Ecusson Brut is a traditional-method sparkling wine.

A blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir and Riesling it is aged for a minimum of two years in the cellars. The grapes are a mix of estate-grown and bought in.
