DEATHS IN A1 CRASH HORROR
Two men die in ‘horrific’ collision
Two people were arrested after a “horrific” fatal collision on the A1 which left two men dead.
The crash between a car and a lorry occurred just before 1am yesterday on the A1 northbound at Colsterworth, between Stamford and Grantham, with the road closed in both directions to allow for investigations.
It took Lincolnshire Police until after 5pm yesterday to confirm the number of fatalities after spending the day investigating how many people were inside the car at the time of the collision.
A man aged 41 and a woman aged 36 who were travelling in the lorry were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving shortly after the crash and remained in custody last night.
A Lincolnshire Police spokesperson said: “We are still in the process of informing family members and will provide further details when this has been completed.”
The lorry was described by the spokesperson as being a “curtain sided heavy goods vehicle.”
Following the collision, Superintendent Phil Vickers of Lincolnshire Police wrote on Twitter: “Horrific scene faced by Emergency Services on the A1 in the early hours this morning.
“Patience during rush hour please, diversion in place.”
Following the crash the road was immediately shut in both directions with motorists told to find an alternative route on their morning commutes.
Signal diversions were put in place with traffic diverted via the A606 and A607 which led to congestion in Melton Mowbray and Grantham.
There were also reports of long tailbacks on the A15 southbound and queues heading back to Wittering.
The southbound carriageway of the A1 re-opened yesterday morning but the northbound carriageway was closed for most of the afternoon to allow for emergency resurfacing of the road.
Highways England announced shortly before 5pm that the northbound carriageway had reopened following the emergency repairs, with “traffic flowing with no delay.”
Anyone who saw either of the vehicles before the collision or witnessed the incident itself, and has not already spoken to officers, is asked to contact Lincolnshire Police on 101 quoting incident 16 of 11/10/2017.
