MARCELLA: SERIES 2 Acorn, cert 15 DVD 2-disc set £24.99

- with Alex Gordon

Marcella is a cop on the edge. Literally. When the second series opens she’s contemplating jumping off a rooftop. Yes, as she screams at one point “I’m not well.” No kidding. Instead of being on duty, DS Marcella Backland (Anna Friel) should be lying down in a darkened room, but is taking bites out of colleagues, suspects, witnesses and anybody who trips over her neurosis in a dark-as-black thriller written by Hans Rosenfeldt, creator of original hit The Bridge (which became The Tunnel in the Brit version). And Nordic noir tricks and quirks are on show, from the jarringly stabbing electronic soundtrack, to it’s love of dark corridors and creepy buildings. This case couldn’t be murkier, Marcella’s hunting a demented paedophile. And it’s uncomfortably close to home when the first victim, found walled up in a derelict house, turns out to be a schoolboy friend of the cop’s son, and he was the last one to see him alive. Despite being too close to the case, and her fragile mental state, Marcella’s still at the sharp end of the investigation with her long-suffering team, including DI Rav Sangha (Ray Panthaki) and DC Mark Travis (Jack Doolan pictured with Anna).
