Peterborough welcomed 2019 in with a bang as revellers set off fireworks in Cathedral Square.

While nothing official had been organised for the city centre, a crowd gathered in the square to say farewell to 2018 - and give a warm welcome to 2019.

Families and friends cheered as the new year started, taking selfies to remember the moment.

Some revellers shared a kiss as the clock struck midnight, while others launched their own unofficial firework display, setting off bangers and rockets near the McDonalds entrance of Queensgate, turning the sky green.

Others raised a glass of something fizzy, and lit sparklers with friends - and strangers.

At the start of 2018, fireworks were set off by Peterborough Cathedral to mark the start of their 900th anniversary, but nothing had been planned to close the year of celebrations.

Cambridgshire police did not report any serious incidents on the night.

A dispersal order was put in place by police to keep party-goers safe. Officers said they were expecting a large number of people to come into the city to celebrate, as pubs, bars and clubs put on special events.

The order enabled police to move people on from an area where they suspect their behaviour is anti-social, and covered the city centre and surrounding streets. Anyone failing to do so faced arrest.
