Jobs lost as HMV closes its doors for the final time
The last large record shop in Peterborough has closed for the final time.
The HMV store in the Queensgate shopping centre ceased trading on Tuesday even though the music chain was rescued from administration by the Canadian company Sunrise Records.
While a majority of the branches of HMV in the UK were saved, meaning 1,487 jobs were retained, a total of 27 were closed, meaning 455 jobs will be lost across the country. It has not been announced how many of these job losses will be in Peterborough.
The chain used to have two Peterborough stores, with one in Cathedral Square - but that branch closed to be replaced by a Nandos restaraunt.
Queensgate Shopping CentremanagerMarkBroadhead, said he was hopeful the unit left empty by HMV would be filled soon.
He said: “We are sorry to learn that HMV Peterborough is one of the chosen stores that will close with immediate effect.
“We will continue to work closely with existing and new retailers to deliver a great mix of stores, products and services for Queensgate.”
HMV became the latest high street casualty when its then owner Hilco called in corporate undertakers in December. Last year other big name retailers including Toys R Us, Poundworld and Maplin all disappeared from city streets.
It was the second time HMV has collapsed in recent years, having filed for administration in 2013.
