Whittlesey wonders reach a second cup final

-

Whittlesey Athletic face two cup finals in five days after winning back-to-back semifinals.

The Peterborough Premier Division side will tackle Over Sports at Histon FC in a Cambs Cup Final on Tuesday, May 7 before heading for Candy Street to take on Moulton Harrox in the Peterborough Senior Cup Final on Saturday, May 11.

Whittlesey reached the county cup final thanks to a last-minute Jack Carter penalty at top-flight rivals Thorney.

Matt Heron had shot Whittlesey ahead in the first-half before Matthew Oliver equalised for Thorney after the interval.

A couple of the leading Premier Division sides flexed their goalscoring muscles last Saturday with Peterborough Sports Development and Netherton United scoring 25 goals between them.

Jordan Macleod scored five goals in a 14-0 win at bottom club Peterborough Polonia and Peterborough Telegraph Sports Awards contender Tommy Randall did likewise for Netherton in an 11-0 thrashing of next-to-bottom Langtoft United.

Netherton boss Jon Harrison also dusted off his boots to make a rare appearance and scored twice.

Second-placed Sports have closed the gap on leaders Harrox to three points, but they have played two more games and will only have three matches to play after this weekend. Sports host Ketton on Saturday (Bee Arena, 2pm) when Harrox entertain Sutton Bridge.

Third-placed Netherton are at Leverington Sports. They are five points behind Sports.
