There was a sad story on the front page of the Evening Telegraph on Friday, March 4, 1997.It told how a teaching assistant who craved attention faked letters from a ‘stalker’ leading to thousands of police man hours being wasted.

Peterborou­gh Crown Court heard she had become emotionall­y attached to a police officer.She was spared jail because the judge ruled it would be ‘unduly harsh and inhumane’.

Final approval was set to be

given for a new traffic scheme for Westgate. The idea of the £250,000 scheme was to reduce traffic and make the area more pedestrian friendly.

The road was already subject to traffic restrictio­ns, but the city council estimated more than 800 drivers a day were flouting them.

There was also hopes of a £500,000 boost for Central Park, but that was dependent on a successful lottery bid.

CCTV cameras in the city centre were set to go live. At a cost of £1million, 45 cameras had been installed to give 24hr

coverage.

Work was due to start on the Deepings bypass after 50 years campaignin­g by residents.

In national news 65Britons were plucked to safety in a ‘Dunkirk-style rescue’ as civil war erupted in Albania.

At the movies, Showcase was showing The English Patient, Jerry Maguire and Evita among others.

On the TV, Red Nose day dominated the BBC’s offering, while ITV had The Bill leading its schedule and Channel 4 was showing Brookside.
