Posh pay the penalty for bad decision-making

-

Just how Posh remain in the thick of the race for the final League One play-off place is a complete mystery.

No back-to-back wins since the end of October have now been accompanied by back-to-back defeats against the worst two teams in the division.

And yet Posh are a win from sixth. This truly is a desperate division quality-wise once the top five are removed from the thought process.

Posh should be in the top six now. The fact they lost at a limited AFC Wimbledon side to a highly dubious late penalty was sad, but this was a self-inflicted reverse.

Posh recovered from a shaky start to dominate the middle part of the contest, but Ivan Toney was thwarted first by goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, then by his own inaccuracy and finally by an offside flag which could easily have gone in his favour. Marcus Maddison was also denied by Ramsdale and those misses became costly when Rhys Bennett was adjudged to have fouled home substitute Dylan Connolly in the penalty area three minutes from time.

It was a honking decision by weak referee Ollie Yates who compounded his error by dismissing Bennett before Joe Piggott stroked home the spot-kick. Thankfully the incompetence of Doncaster is keeping Posh in touch, although there are several others now showing an interest in sixth spot.
