RE Peterborough city councillors reject plan to give lowest paid workers £10 per hour: Let the big wigs survive on minimum wages then they would soon change their minds !!

Julie Marshall

Well I agree with council no the low paid workers don’t deserve a pay rise for what the do but long serving employees yes definitely with 8+ years service

All employees including the bosses should show exactly how much they get paid. Then look at how much the bosses get paid for sitting in an office and getting expenses paid etc, compared to the poor guys that get up early to clean our streets in all weathers!!! The divide in pay from top to bottom is outrageous, yes we all choose our jobs, but no one is worth what some get paid and the whole reason businesses go bust.

£10 an hour equates to about £18,200 a year in income. After tax that’s about £1350 a month. Now take out £700 rent, £100 for gas and electric, £100 for council tax, another £150 for insurance, TV licence, TV subscription, mobile costs, broadband, water bill etc. That’s leaves you with about £300 a month for food, clothes and travel .... Now imagining if this full time employee is married with 2 kids. In the current climate with the cost of living being so high, its borderline criminal to be paying anyone less than £10 an hour.

The proposal was £10 an hour minimum and a 10% pay rise for the rest. It was rejected based on the 10% pay rise. But as the proposal was for BOTH it’s being demonised as “Council rejects £10ph minimum wage”
