Quizzers boost for good causes

- By Janet Cooke - email: janet.4.cooke@btinternet.com

Rotarian Adrian Acton reports: “The quiz team from the Axe and Compass, Hemingford Abbots magnificently triumphed in the latest Giant Charity Pub Quiz, held in pubs and clubs across the local area. The quiz attracted 48 pubs and clubs and raised in excess of £2,600 which will be used towards charities supported by Rotary and other good causes. Additionally, £700 was handed out to the winning pubs for them to donate to their chosen charities. In all some 720 quizzers took part in the 21st running of this bi-annual event.”

And the good news doesn’t stop there. St Ives Rotary has now raised over £50,000, across all the Pub Quizzes they have run.

This a tremendous amount of money, and the Rotarians really would like to thank everyone who has ever taken part, for helping them to help so many others. Adrian Acton can truly feel proud of all his efforts over the years in raising this huge amount.

Thanks also go to fellow Rotary Clubs of Huntingdon, Huntingdon Cromwell, Ramsey, Rushden Chichele, St Neots St Mary’s, Peterborough Ortons and St Ives Inner Wheel Club, plus everyone who performed as Quizmasters for their enthusiasm and support.

The top three teams, their scores (out of a maximum of 195) and the charities they supported with their winners’ cheques are:

1. Axe and Compass, Hemingford Abbots 189 (Hemingford Village Hall); 2. King of the Belgians, Hartford 186 (Huntingdon Community Centre); 3. Honest John, Chatteris 183 (Chatteris Xmas Lights).

In particular, thanks go to sponsors Peter Lane and Partners, Estate Agents, for their continuing support of this event and for providing the Top Team Trophy.

The money prizes given to the remaining top ten teams meant that other charities supported by this initiative were MAGPAS, Cystic Fibrosis, Stroke Assn/British Heart, Anthony Nolan, Pancreatic Cancer, Help for Heroes and Little Miracles.

Anyone wishing to join in the next quiz, on Thursday, March 26, 2020, can get more details from Sandra King on 01480 462450 or email her at ‘kingsk1066@btinternet.com’ or contact any member of St Ives Rotary club.
