Athletics - English cross country relays

Athletes from Peterborou­gh and Nene Valley AC went on the run at Wormwood Scrubs on Saturday, but it was all legit as the West London Common was the setting for the South of England Cross Country Relays.

The U15 girls trio faired best finishing 12th out of 39 clubs.

Charlotte Curren clocked 7:59 on the opening 2km leg with Elizabeth Eames following up in a time of 8:06. Chelsie Bole ran 8:12 on the final leg.

Felix Bowling completed the opening leg for the U13 boys in 7:45. Riley Vines clocked 8:08, and Noah Fell with 8:45 in the final leg placed the boys 15th out of 30 teams.

The senior men fielded two quartets, with the A team finishing 18th out of 34 and the B team five places further back.

Simon Fell with 15:13 was the fastest Peterborou­gh athlete over the 4.5km circuit. Phil Martin ran the opening leg in 15:18, Mark Popple then clocked 15:34 and Mark Alder 17:11 completed the team.

The B team runners all went under 17 minutes. Club cross country captain Steve Hall’s 16:13 was just two seconds quicker than Thomas Wright. Ryan Anderson was five seconds back, while Paul Houlden went round in 16:59.

A senior ladies threesome were 30th out of 38 teams. Sarah Caskey covered the 3.4km circuit in 13:32 followed by Maddy Long with 14:52 and Fiona Chance 18:06.

With some reserves travelling a number of incomplete teams were entered, and U13 Callum Long ran a 9:08 leg.

Evie Hemmings and Megan Ferris ran in the girls U13s, with Hemmings completing the 2km course in 8:42 and Ferris clocking 10:39.

Elliott Long with 8:17 and Isaac Fell 9:33 ran the 2km circuit for the U15 boys.

Eastern Run 5k fun run last week there were medals in the Ampthill Trophy cross country for Ella Robinson and Dylan Tomaselli.

On a tough hilly 4km course Ella was first girl overall taking the U17 women’s title and in a close race Dylan took the silver medal. Both youngsters go to Arthur Mellows Village College in Glinton and run for Hunts AC.

Other local youngsters competing included: Eliza Mardon (U13) Oscar Tomaselli (U13) Aedan Lydon ( U15) Michael Sells (U15) and Esme Lydon (U11),

• An East of England team with a strong local presence finished second behind Cambridge University in the annual cross country race between the University, the East and the RAF.

Cambridge and Coleridge’s Jonathan Escalatant­e-Phillips, one of the pre-race favourites at the aborted Great Eastern Run last Sunday, won the 10km race in 31:35.

Former Nene Valley ace Lloyd Kempston clocked 32:39 for 11th while Helpston veterans John Herbert and Michael Moore were 23rd and 36th in 34:30 and 35:57 respective­ly.

Helpston man Steve Robinson was running for the RAF team and clocked 33:36.
