CHILD’S PLAY Vertigo, cert 15, Blu-ray £13 From the producers of It, comes a re-working of the controversial 1988 hit about a scary doll called Chucky, who’s surprisingly voiced by Mark Hamill of Luke Skywalker fame.

And no Halloween should be without this funny, manic, gory, and frankly scarily tricky treat. Yes, it’s crazy that a goggly red-eyed, battery-operated doll is capable of giving adults heebie-jeebies, but Chucky, will have you peering through trembly fingers. The story’s been changed some from the blood-chilling original that had censors having fits, in that Chucky isn’t the result of a dead psycho’s voodoo curse, but rather a disgruntled employee at a Vietnamese Buddi doll company has inserted a rogue chip in the doll’s operating system which makes him do very bad things. ROBERT THE BRUCE Signature, cert 15 DVD £7.99 This is a spin-off from Braveheart with Angus Macfadyen reprising his role in the 1995 Mel Gibson tartan blood-and-thunder epic as Bruce, who in the wake of William Wallace’s death, crowned himself king and took up the Scottish cause, only to suffer defeats by the mighty English forces. With his army scattered, Robert’s a hunted man, and wounded. Near to death he’s saved by a young widow who nurses him back to health. To fight another day. Snowy Montana settings don’t quite look like the Highlands and the accents are dodgy, but it’s a sturdy tale.
