Once again we saw huge weights being taken in the latest March Open on the Old Nene at March.

Top rod was Danny Mason from his peg just below Wigstons Bridge. He fished hemp and tares targeting the bigger roach and his bold approach paid off handsomely for 32lb 5oz. March rod Paul Constable was runner-up with 29lb 4oz, then came Billy Hughes with 28lb 4oz.

•There was a big turnout for the East Midland Winter League practice match fished on the Old Nene at Benwick.

The village centre is always going to fish well and it was where match winner Simon Colcloughdrew. He put a fine net of roach to the scales topped up with a bonus tench for 26lb 13oz.

Local rod Paul Brandon came in second with a fine 18lb 10oz of roach from below the wires, then came Ray Malle on 17lb 6oz. With only one section being won with less than double figures, hopes are high for another good match this coming weekend.

After its drop in form,

Cock Bank fenland drain did fish quite well last winter and if the past couple of results from the Whittlesey Saturday series are anything to go by it will not be long before we see some much bigger events lining the banks.

In atrocious conditions, top rod with 19lb 14oz was Andy Lawrence who fished a short whip line for most of the day. The same tactics saw Mel Saggers into the runnerup spot on 19lb 9oz and then came Mark Barron with 16lb 11oz.

•The Tony Copeman Memorial Trophy was the prize for Yaxley, Farcet and Holme DAC, and Mike Mohan won it for the second consecutive year.

With the drain running hard and a deep chocolate colour, fish were at a premium. Mike alternated between a short and long whip line, and using a single red pinkie caught plenty of small roach, bleak and skimmers for his 3lb 4 ¾oz. Runner-up Lionel Whaley caught most of his 2lb 3¾oz using single pinkie fishing a waggler close to the far bank. Third was Roy Bridson with 1lb 7 ¼ oz.

The latest results from

• the Ramsey and District Angling Society look very impressive with both the Old Nene and the Forty Foot producing top quality winter sport.

On Wednesday Andrew Wilding caught well all day, using the whip and pole from end peg 9 for 20lb 1oz. His catch included a bonus tench to see him well clear of the chasing pack.

Keith Rayment came second a few pegs away with 15lb 11oz, followed by Harry Young on 11lb 4oz.

•O■ Sunday The Narrows on Ramsey Forty Foot saw a steady flow and good colour holding all day, ideal conditions. Malcolm Plant with 20lb 5oz topped a strong field, catching on a whip with maggot. Malc Hobbs put 14lb 3oz from peg 1 to taken the runner up spot, followed by Liam Harlock with 11lb 3oz.
