Posh bow out after conceding late on

A goal five minutes from time ended Peterborou­gh United’s dream of making it to the first round proper of the Women’s FA Cup for the first time.

Posh went down 3-2 at home to higher-level New Saints after a game display.

Posh started well and went ahead on 12 minutes when Keir Perkins converted a fine pass from Leah Crawford.

The visitors levelled with a controvers­ial goal just before the break after Posh ‘keeper Kathryn Lusk had exited with a back injury. New Saints went 2-1 up after a spell of heavy pressure with 18 minutes to go, but Posh hit back 10 minutes later through Donna McGuigan, before New Saints had the last word.

Second-placed Posh host Kettering in the East Midlands Premier Division on Sunday (2pm).

Peterborou­gh United under 18s can make up for a disappoint­ing Midland Youth Alliance League result last Saturday by making progress in the FA Youth Cup at Dereham tonight (Thursday, 7pm).

Posh were beaten 5-1 at local rivals Northampto­n Town in a top-of-the-table clash last weekend.

Senior profession­al Harrison Burrows scored the goal for Posh who are now second in the table behind Cobblers. Posh host Stevenage on Saturday (11am).

Posh will be keen to gain revenge in tonight’s first round tie for an embarrassi­ng 2-1 loss at Dereham in the FA Youth Cup in 2015.

Future first teamers Leo Da Silva Lopes and Dion Henry played in that game.

Posh beat Huddersfie­ld, then of the Premier League, on the way to the fourth round last season where they lost 1-0 to Bury at London Road.
