The Peterborough Evening Telegraph
Astonishing numbers of ace Posh front three
Posh - A statistical special on League One
Peterborough United matches are attended by two OPTA statisticians these days as the thirst for numbers and hard facts increases even at League One level.
There’s also a couple of scruffy-looking press box residents who provide the information that leads to possession stats and those ‘expected goals’ measurements that baffle football writers over 30... most of them then.
Stats do provide an interesting background to a long campaign though. They are also useful to TV commentators who lack the flair of the great Barry Davies to describe what’s going on in front of them without something that happened between the same two sides 30 years ago, as if that was at all relevant. Anyway the Peteterborough Telegraph has put together some stats from the current League One campaign and Posh have some impressive numbers.
Most obviously the numbers the formidable front three of Ivan Toney, Mo Eisa and Marcus Maddison are posting are astonishing.
Posh have three players in the top four of League One’s goalscoring charts with only Fleetwood’s Paddy Madden getting in the way of a club hat-trick.
Top scorers: 11 Toney, Eisa, 10, Madden, 8 Maddison, Ian Henderson (Rochdale).
That’s 30 goals before the end of October between three players. They’ll have about 90 between them by the end of the season at their current rate!
Eisa has scored from 11 of his 27 shots in 15 League One. Nineteen have been on target which is an astonishing 70% and yet lower than AFC Wimbledon’s on-loan Brentford striker Marcus Forss.
Shots on target %: 83 Forss, 70 Eisa, 68 James Norwood (Ipswich), 67 Jonson Clarke-Harris (Bristol R), 58 Maddison, 52 Madden, 47 Toney.
Toney’s 51 shots on goal is way more than anyone else among the top scorers in League One. Teammate Maddison is also well clear in second.
Most shots: 51 Toney, 40 Maddison, 31 Norwood,
