Lions tamed again despite big improvemen­t

Peterborou­gh Lions delivered an improved performanc­e in their Midlands Premier Division fixture at home to highfliers Sandbach last weekend.

Fresh from a 99-0 mauling at Newport, the city side restricted the team in third to a 36-5 win at Bretton Park.

Oakeley Mellish forced his way over for Lions’ points, but it’s not getting easier for a team rock bottom of the table and stuck on -5 points as they travel to second-placed Sheffield on Saturday.

DIVISION ONE EAST

Oundle came from behind to win 24-8 at Lutterwort­h.

They picked up a bonus point for scoring four trues through Chris Humphries, Toby Snelling, Gabriel Smithson and Mark Carter.

DIVISION THREE EAST

Bourne and Stamford kept the pressure on unbeaten leaders Stockwood Park after impressive weekend wins.

Rees Burns and James Stables crossed for two tries apiece as second-placed Stamford beat Bedford Queens 47-5.

And Bourne are just five points behind in third after a 27-19 win over Oakham. Sam Thornburn, Jamie Colangelo and Adam Binns crossed for Bourne’s tries, with Sam Evison kicking three conversion­s and two penalties.

DIVISION FOUR EAST

Aylestone St James claimed their first win of the season as they destroyed Deepings 570, a result that shoved Thorney to the bottom after they were crushed 54-0 by visitors

BOROUGH JUNIORS

The under 16s maintained their 100% record with a 6413 win over Biggleswad­e in the East Midlands Cup.

Josh Webster scored three tries with Louis Edwards, Tom Abbondanza, George Salisbury, Ameen Gabilee, Ethan Manning and William Manning also touching down.

The under 14 boys won 4513 at Biggleswad­e in the East Midlands Cup as Norbert Zastawnik completed a hat-trick of tries in the first-half, but the under 15 boys were beaten 490 by Bedford in their tie.

Liv Hill (4) and Claudia Dugmore (3) led the way in a 13-try 71-0 win for the under 15 girls in the National Cup against North Walsham.
