COPS celebrate seventh win in 10 years to reach national final in March
Swimming: East Midlands Final
A great weekend of racing saw City of Peterborough Swimming Club’s (COPs) A Team win the East Midlands National Arena League Premier League Final to qualify for the National Final in March - the equivalent of the FA Cup final for swimming clubs!
It was COPS’ seventh league win in 10 years. The B team finished fourth in the second premier league gala, which is an excellent result and avoids relegation to the second division.
Saturday evening was the third and final round and the East Midlands Final is the strongest it has ever been.
Last year the club finished fifth after a number of years of winning the trophy.
The eight teams in this year’s final were COPS A, City of Cambridge SC, City of Milton Keynes SC, City of Norwich SC, Northampton SC, Nottingham Leander SC, West Suffolk SC and Norwich Swan SC.
COPS went in to the final ranked first after winning both previous rounds.
The gala results totals at the end of the night were:
1st COPS A - 305 points, 2nd City of Cambridge SC - 294, 3rd City of Milton Keynes SC - 289, 4th City of Norwich SC - 239, 5th Nottm Leander - 182, 6th West Suffolk - 179, 7th Northampton - 163, 8th Norwich Swan - 151.

However, the club had a huge number of second and third places, winning 24 second and thirds and a total of 37 top three finishes from 50 races.
COPS Head Coach, Ben Negus, said: “I’m very proud of the team performance this evening. We won so many races through better race skills, relay take-overs and our team atmosphere was first class.
“I’m delighted that some of our junior swimmers got to experience some of the leadership that was being displayed in the pool tonight, but also be a big part of it.
“We look forward to challenging our skills and leadership qualities against the nation’s best in Cardiff in March 2020.”
