Hurdler Reidy making his name as allrounder

-

Peterborough Nene Valley hurdling specialist Sean Reidy is starting to make a name for himself as an athletics all-rounder, writes Barry Warne.

The 38-year-old enjoyed his best performance yet at the weekend, finishing seventh in the Southern Indoor Combined Events Heptathlon Championship at Lee Valley.

Against some of the finest multi-eventers in the country Reidy was up with the best with times of 7.91 over 60m and 9.22 in the 60m hurdles.

The professional cartoonist is now impressing in middle distance events, and his outstanding performance of the weekend was a 2:46.49 in the 1000m.

A decent shot put of 8.55m, a steady long jump of 5.69m and clearances of 1.65m in the high jump and 3.23m in the pole vault meant a personal best (PB) tally of 3,924 points.

“I’ve been a struggling with calf issues for the last three weeks” said Reidy. “I didn’t think I’d make it past the second event, but by the end of day two I was on my way to a PB thanks to a solid performances and an unexpected pole vault best! I’m hoping to get up to 4,000 points at the National Championships in January.”

PNV’s Simon Achurch led the way in the Peterborough Throws Pentathlon with a cumulative total of 2,946 points.

Sixty-eight year olds Kevin Bates and Tim Needham were also in action scoring 2,073 and 2,265 points respectively.

Teenager Luke Phillips achieved PBs of 7.91m in the shot and 18.54m in the discus.

Andrea Jenkins, one of the country’s top veteran throwers, completed four disciplines and looks to be heading into 2020 in good form.
