Keep calm, carry on... and wash you hands
Schools have closed, pupils have been sent home and the focus is firmly on the battle to contain the coronavirus - or Covid 19 - to give it its proper name. The precautionary steps taken by local schools are entirely justified. Schools have also been prompt in giving us statements and updates on their situation.
It is vital that public bodies keep the media and the public fully informed of every situation involving the virus as it develops because speculation and sensationalism will always fill the void left by any lack of clear information. Parents and pupils at schools so far impacted will understandably be concerned about the situation and the potential risks in many cases.
The seriousness of the situation should not be downplayed. But it is also important to keep the situation in proportion and most importantly exactly what level of risk exists in each situation. It is clear that more cases of the virus will appear in the UK and that organisations - not just schools - will be challenged by what to do in the coming weeks.
Businesses, public transport networks, hospitals will all be potentially affected. It may be a cliche but it is also true that pulling together, keeping calm and modifying our behaviour as neccessary will be vital.
Following the health advice (detailed on pages 4 and 5 of your PT) will help enormously. There is no need for panic but there is a need for clear heads and decisive action.
