New managers like to make an instant impression, but few manage it as explosively as Peterborough Northern Star boss Scott Goodwin.

Goodwin was formally appointed as boss of the United Counties Premier Division club last Friday.

On Saturday he sent a message via WhatsApp to last season’s playing squad inviting them for a chat and a beer.

But on Sunday he decided he was letting the entire squad go and informed the players on WhatsApp again. The decision caused shock and laughter on the local non-league football scene.

Goodwin’s second message read: “Evening lads. We’ve been in the job now for just over 24 hours and the response we’ve had from players we know has been unbelievable.

“This has put me in a difficult position early on and we’ve decided as a club we’re going to have nobody back from the original squad this season. Now I know a lot weren’t coming back anyway and I’m not going to be a liked man, and maybe wasn’t anyway, but this is a decision we’ve taken and one we’re standing by.

“Wish you all the best in whatever you do next.”

Goodwin replaced Steve Wilson as manager with Kev Ward appointed as assistant manager. Wilson had been in charge since November, 2017,

Goodwin was most recently assistant manager of Ilkeston Town, but has managed at Star’s level in the past.

Ward was interim manager of Wisbech Town for a while last season.

Star finished 14th in the United Counties Premier Division last season and are likely to field a team of players from outside Peterborough next season. It’s understood they will be operating with a bigger budget.

Star were recently taken over by local businessman Vince Gosling who is now the club chairman.

The new vice-chairman is Scott Steward.

The PT has been unable to reach Goodwin or the club for a comment.
