No hard feelings, no regrets, but plenty of pride for ex-boss

-

Steve Wilson insists he left the manager’s role at Peterborough Northern Star with no hard feelings or any regrets.

Wilson has revealed he quit the Branch Bros Stadium, after two-and-a-half seasons in the job, of his own accord after a meeting with Star’s new board.

Local man Wilson has been replaced by Market Harborough-based Scott Goodwin who has already dispensed with the playing squad of last season.

“I could have stayed,” Wilson revealed. “I had a very amicable chat with the new men in charge, but I just felt it was the right time to go.

“I’d been thinking about leaving towards the end of last season anyway.

“It had become a very hard job and I was pretty much doing it without help.

“I still loved the job though and I still have a lot of feeling for the club.

“I was proud to be involved in building a side with so many talented city and locally-based players.

“I feel that’s important at non-league level.

“Even the top non-league clubs like Peterborough Sports and Yaxley have many local players and of course they both have local managers in Jimmy Dean and Andy Furnell.

“The new manager will have his reasons for building a squad his way, but I know that the lads who played for me will get fixed up quickly and I have already had calls from managers asking about them.

“We had one of the best three goalkeepers in the UCL Premier Division last season in Dan Swan and we had a striker in Craig Smith who scored 20 goals before Christmas.

“I’d expect many Premier League clubs would want players like that in their side.”
