Youngsters in lockdown have raised more than a thousand pounds for charity by making jewellery.

At the beginning of lockdown the Muirhead and Thorp families decided to isolate together.

Esme Thorp, from Ufford, told mum Emma, that she wanted to sell some bracelets she was making. They decided to sell the jewellery to raise money for the Light Project Peterborough, as the children were keen to help the homeless.

The team, Angus and Sebastian Muirhead and Esme and Stanley Thorp, who attend Barnack Primary and preschool got straight to work spending hours creating different necklaces and bracelets. Starting off with odd bits and bobs they already had, they quickly realised they needed more materials! As donations piled in, the children ‘upped their game’ buying more supplies to create their jewellery, including special beads and nicer clasps.

Expecting only relatives and family friends to buy the jewellery, the talented team expected to raise £100. But when they set up their JustGiving page school friends, teachers and others bought their creations. From 69 donations, the children raised £1,170.

Angus’ mum Lizzie said: “People have donated huge amounts of money. Everyone has donated at least £5 and some donated £50.

“We thought with so many to make, they might get bored but it didn’t work out that way at all. It’s amazing.

“In years to come they can look back and say they did something kind with their best friends.”

Inspired by their very first fundraiser, the children still want to help other charities, with their next idea, wanting to sell starfish!
