Wanting to show their Support for our care homes, a sewing team of 30 members in the Peterborough areahas been making scrubs for care workers across the city.

After hearing news of the tragic deaths of six elderly residents in a city care home, project coordinator Sarah Gee wanted to play her part in helping out to bring a smile to carers’ faces.

Grown from a ‘spur of the moment idea’, Sarah set to putting the plan into motion. Starting with only a bag of fabric and two patterns, Sarah was raring to go and started to recruit a team of volunteers and more donations via the Peterborough4You Facebook community page.

Within 10 days, the growing team of 30 sewers put their needles into action to create the scrubs.

And in just three weeks the dedicated team has produced more than 100 sets of scrubs, using any fabric donations they had, including table cloths and bed spreads. There has even been a special My Little Pony set of scrubs.

Not stopping there, the team has also produced care packages and ‘letters of love’ filled with warm messages to thank the carers for their hard work. Sarah was also inspired to help the care homes by her nan who has dementia. She said: “The reason why I’m doing it is I volunteer at a local care home one day a week. I pamper elderly ladies and support with activities and events. When I heard about the tragic deaths at Philia Lodge I felt I had to help.”

Supplied with goodies, sets of scrubs and care packages the care home were “overwhelmed with happiness”.

Working on their next sets for another three care homes, the dedicated team are continuing to appeal for donations.
