THE NEST
Acorn, cert 15
DVD 2-disc set £24.99 When a wealthy couple with everything - except a baby invite a fledgling surrogate mum into their loch-side house she turns out to be a cuckoo in their designer nest.
Despite a mass of questionable moral issues, this BBC1 domestic noir gripped millions. Like most thrillers of course, it relies on a big coincidence to get the pot boiling. Emily (Sophie Rundle) and Dan (Martin Compston) are due to meet at a hospital, when Emily bumps into teenager Kaya (Mirren Mack) in her car as she’s arguing with a man in the street. Worried about the injured girl, Emily gives her a lift to the hospital. Here snoopy Kaya learns that Dan’s sister Hilary, a nurse, is their surrogate. When she collapses with a miscarriage while treating the girl (there’s that coincidence!) it gives Kaya an idea of how to make ‘easy’ money. She volunteers to have a baby using Emily’s last frozen embryo. Sure enough, the couple offer her thousands and take her back to their lovely house outside Glasgow, to stay until the baby’s born. But, despite the luxury, Kaya grows tired of Emily’s mother
FLACK: COMPLETE SERIES 2 Acorn, cert 15 DVD £19.99 High fashion, celebrity creeps and insincere twocheek kissing usher in a second W-channel series about a team of PR agents. Scandals abound in and out of the office as Anna Paquin (pictured) returns as Robyn, who’s trying to stay off booze and drugs and fly straight while keeping her clients out of screaming tabloid headlines, and avoiding trouble with her volcanic boss Caroline (Sophie Okonedo). Of course that doesn’t prove easy, thanks to the agency’s scandaldodging client list that includes dodgy off-camera
TV prime-time presenters, politicians with dubious connections, a brawling model, and an actress who needs some flack to cover-up a social hen fussing and escapes back to her tenement dump and the nightclub drugs scene. The consequences turn out to be disastrous for the couple’s marriage and Dan’s big development project in a rundown Glasgow area, and all Emily’s plans of a better future are threatened too. But, will there be a happy ending for all?
