Five-point plan to help enable safe shopping

-

The British Independent Retailers Association (BIRA) has backed JPIMedia’s #supportlocal campaign and stressed that customers can shop safely when non-essential outlets reopen on Monday, June 15.

BIRA, who represent an extensive range of traders from hardware to fashion stores, has been preparing members for the reopening of shops over the past few days.

A shopkeepers’ survey to gauge feelings ahead of reopening confirmed more than half of members intend to lift their shutters.

Only two per cent do not plan to reopen at all, with the remainder already trading within government guidelines.

The study stressed business bosses want to ensure customers and staff shop and work safely.

The association has issued members with a five-point plan, including information on Perspex screening and social distancing signage as well as stocking up on staff Personal Protective Equipment and hand sanitiser.

BIRA chief executive Andrew Goodacre (pictured, below) said: “It is great news that many retailers will be opening their doors on June 15 for the first time since March. I am confident retailers will ensure employees and customers are safe.”

He also praised members for adapting to new conditions and is confident they will continue to evolve to suit customer demand.

Mr Goodacre added: “During the lockdown period we saw many (90% of non-food) retailers close their doors. Many of these businesses have exhibited their entrepreneurial flair by adjusting their business model to these unique circumstances – more e-commerce, deliveries, click and collect, better use of social media to connect with customers, using the Internet as a shop window.

“Now the focus is on opening with a safe environment – safe for employees and safe for customers. The guidance has been issued with retailers working hard to ensure they are doing what they need to comply.

“There is no doubt all retailers will have to accept some changes we have seen – especially more Internet shopping – and embrace the technology.

“This is not to abandon the shop but to enhance its digital footprint, create multi-channel offerings and stronger customer proposition.”

“It’s great to see JPIMedia group’s #supportlocal campaign.

“The stories we have heard from across the region of people supporting each other are inspiring. Picking up the phone to an elderly relative so they can benefit from hearing the sound of a caring voice. Helping those who struggle with technology to do their online shopping. Kids entertaining their sisters and brothers to give mum a small break.

“These are the things we need you to continue doing most. Simply, be kind to one another.

“I don’t know how long this pandemic will last but knowing that the public are looking after each other, supporting each other, showing that incredible kindness to each other, keeps me going. I know that when this ends, and it will end, we will be able to look back and be proud that we were there for

each other.’’
