Coventry doubled Matt Godden’s Posh wages

Coventry City doubled Matt Godden’s Posh wages when he changed clubs last summer.

Posh director of football Barry Fry made the revelation during a long conversation with the Peterborough Telegraph about agents and transfers.

Posh paid Stevenage around £400k for Godden when he became Steve Evans’ first signing as Posh manager.

The striker enjoyed a productive first season at Posh scoring 18 goals - 14 of them before Christmas but Evans was replaced by Darren Ferguson who felt he was unlikely to start Godden regularly so he was allowed to leave.

Coventry fought off interest from Portsmouth to sign Godden for a reported £750k fee and he helped his new club to the League One title by scoring 15 goals.

“I didn’t want Matty to leave,” Fry revealed. “I thought he would be decent back-up to Ivan Toney and Mo Eisa, but Matty felt that at 28 he wanted to play regularly so we reluctantly let him leave.

“And what a great move it turned out be for both clubs. We made a healthy profit on Matty, and he doubled his wages and won promotion.

“We are not bitter at all because Matt is a great lad who deserves his success. We weren’t exactly short of goals so I doubt he would have been the difference to us going up either.

“Mo Eisa did fade in the second-half of the season, but he still made a decent contribution and when Siriki Dembele moved up front he was outstanding.

Eisa scored 16 goals in his first Posh season, 15 of them before Christmas.
