Posh congratulate Cobblers and look forward to beating them again!

Posh offered hearty congratulations to Northampton Town following their promotion to League One this week.

And no wonder given Posh’s overall impressive record against the Cobblers!

Northampton booked their place back in League One after a two-season absence with a 4-0 thumping of Exeter City in the League Two play-off final at Wembley on Monday.

Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony tweeted: “Well done to the Cobblers & welcome back to League One. The one real ‘local’ rivalry I’ve experienced in 15 years at Posh.”

Posh haven’t lost to Northampton in eight meetings since MacAnthony took control at Posh in October, 2006. Indeed the last Cobblers win in the fixture was April, 2006.

Posh co-owner Dr Jason

Neale believes the home fixture with Cobblers could be worth £100k to his club.

Dr Neale said: “Congratulations Northampton and we look forward to welcoming you to the Weston Homes Stadium next season. I’m already excited.

“A local derby is worth £100k+ assuming we can have fans in the stadium.”

Posh completed a League One ‘double’ over Cobblers the last time they were in the same division in the 2017-18 season. It was 4-1 at Sixfields under Grant McCann and 2-0 at London Road under Steve Evans.

Posh have dominated Cobblers over the years. In 54 Football League clashes between the great rivals Posh have won 27, drawn 13 and lost 14.

It’s now 12 seasons since Cobblers finished above Posh in the Football League standings.
