BOWLS: Jim Weston of Brotherhoods won his Hunts County singles semi-final 21-14 against Yaxley’s Pat Padley. POSH: Manager Noel Cantwell turned down a bid of £3,000 from Workington for defender Keith Oakes.
CRICKET: Left-arm swing bowler John Ellington bagged 8-30 as Bourne bowled Spalding out for 72 on the way to a seven-wicket win in the South Lincs League. OLYMPICS: Peterborough swimmer Brian Brinkley (pictured above) recorded the two fastest 200m butterfly times of his life at the Montreal Games, but had to settle for sixth place in the final. SPEEDWAY: Peterborough Panthers’ display in a Fours semi-final in King’s Lynn was described as ‘inept’ by ET reporter Kevin Brown. Panthers finished last of five teams with just five points. PAC won the 1500m, 800m and shot put events in an Eastern Counties meeting at the Embankment.
CRICKET: Buckworth retained the Jubilee Shield with a 13-run succes over Castor which was bad luck on Terry Moon who claimed 4-25 for the runners-up.
