Fear City: New York vs The Mafia
Netflix, from Wednesday
If you mention the five families of New York, then for many people it will bring to mind classic gangster movie The Godfather, in which Marlon Brando, as Vito Corleone, headed up the most powerful of the Mafia clans ruling over the Big Apple. Fact or fiction? Well, as it turned out, Francis Ford Coppola’s 1972 movie, and the novel by Mario Puzo on which it was based, was not a million miles from the truth: in the 1970s, the city was ruled with a bloody fist by five such families – until, that is, a group of federal agents tried the unthinkable. This hard-hitting documentary series chronicles how the agents took on the Mafia empires of NYC at the height of their powers. And, as any Godfather fan knows, you don’t mess with the Mafia.
TV
Downton Abbey ITV, 8pm, Sunday
When Julian Fellowes’ period drama about life at a Yorkshire stately home began in September 2010, nobody expected it to become a worldwide TV juggernaut that would go on to spawn a successful big screen sequel. But that’s what happened – we simply became sucked into and addicted to the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their working-class staff. Now we’re being treated to another chance to see the sixth and final season, which begins in 1925. Times are a-changing, with aristocratic families cutting their costs to make their estates pay their way. After their friends the Darnleys are forced to sell their ancestral home, Robert must devise a new plan or risk following in their footsteps. Hugh Bonneville, Maggie Smith and Michelle Dockery star.

Writer-director Martin McDonagh’s blackly comic thriller pits one vigilante parent against her local police force in a fictional midwestern town. Impeccably scripted and blessed with a blistering lead performance from Frances McDormand, this is a near perfect film. McDonagh’s explosive morality tale is fuelled by the righteous anger of a spirited woman, who believes her concerns are being ignored by men in power and will not rest until all lines of inquiry has been exhausted in the pursuit of justice. Her rebel yell sparks sickening violence that may divide audiences, including one scene in a dentist’s surgery that leaves jaws truly dropped, but brutality always serves the lean, muscular narrative. Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell also star.
