Ambitious ladies team seek recruits from ‘rookie’ days
American Football - City club are planning for a new season
The Peterborough Royals ladies American football team are determined to be in great shape when their new season starts in the new year.
The ambitious club have already held one rookie recruitment day session at their Bretton Park base – a shared home with the Peterborough Lions rugby union club – and another is planned for August 22 (9.3oam-1pm) at the same venue.
The club are looking for local ladies who want to try the sport or who would like to get involved on an administrative level.
The Royals will be entering the seven- a-side ‘Women’s Contact’ competition which is part of British American Football Association’s (BAFA) national Womens American Football tournament.
Royals team manager Tanya Dales said: “We have had a complete club restructure and are going in to the new season hosting a solid coaching team consisting of six coaches who between them hold 70 years experience in playing and coaching American football.
“We are a competitive, professionally driven team, looking to make an impression on this upcoming season!
“Our first rookie recruitment day was a great success with 25 ladies turning up to give the socially distanced workshops a go.
“We had one coach to a maximum of five players and everyone got to experience 10 minutes in each position, followed by some non-contact tackling and blocking drills.
It went very well.”
Full training for the new season will start in September subject to the latest UK Government’s advice on the Covid-19 problem.
The Women’s Contact League is expected to run from January to March in 2021.
