Manager Darren Ferguson is adamant Posh can succeed in the 2020-21 season despite the loss of star manIvan Toney to Brentford in a deal that could be worth £10 million to the club.

Ferguson acknowledged the superhuman efforts of his 26-goal striker last term, but was also at pains to point out the club’s impressive striker recruitment record in recent seasons.

Toney himself was a replacement for 33-goal Jack Marriott and Jonson ClarkeHarris has already arrived at Posh to replace Toney.

“No-one replaces strikers better than we do,” Ferguson stated. “Wesigngoodonesand replace them with good ones.

“In terms of getting the right price for them there is noonebetterthanusandIam very fortunate to have owners happy to re-invest transfer fees into theplaying squad.

“It would be better if these top players helped us to have success, but Ivan could hardly have done any more to get us up last season. He was absolutely outstanding.”

Toney’s fee will remain undisclosed, butPoshinsist they have received a good price for a 24 year-old player who was about to enter the last year of his contract

And Ferguson is confident ToneywilltearuptheChampionship with a Brentford team who lost in the second tier play-off final last season.

Ferguson added: “I’m delighted for Ivan and I wish him well. This move has been in the pipeline for a long time. Everyone knows Brentford tried hard to get Ivan in January and they have been very persistent.

“And that’s good news for Ivan as it suggests they will play him and I’d expect him to do very well. The manager has done very well there so he will be staying which is good for Ivan andthe style of play at Brentford will suit him down to the ground.

“They have good players who create a lot of chances. They are also a progressive club that has just moved to a newstadiumsoitcouldbethe right time to join them.

“I am sure he will thrive. and I am sure we will thrive without him.”
