Ambitious Ivan has his sights set on the Premier League after Bees switch
Ivan Toney has his sights set on the Premier League following his £10 million sale to Championship side Brentford.
It’s understood Toney was holding out for a move to a top-flightclubasPoshactually agreed a transfer fee with the Bees almost two months ago.
But an eight-month long pursuit by Brentford was finally rewarded with Toney signing a five-year contract at the newBrentford Community Stadium this week.
Andtheplayerisconfident his PremierLeagueambitions are only on hold for a year.
“Brentford should be in the Premier League already,” Toney said.
“I watched them whenever I could last season and they have great players and play a great style of attacking football.
“That style should suit me.
Theykeeppossessionandcreate lots of chances so hopefully I’ll be the missing piece of the puzzle and I can bang in plenty of goals for them.
“I wantedtogosomewhere with great ambition and whereIwill play regularly and I believe I have achieved that.
“I’m a winner and I’ll do whatever it takes to win a game. I’ll be aggressive in the right waywhichwasn’talways the case in the early daysof my career.
“The new stadium is a great place to play and I can’t wait to get started.
“I’m delighted we finally got the deal over the line.”
Toney played in the first game at the Community Stadium on Tuesday, but didn’t score i n a 2- 2 draw with League One side Oxford.
His competitive debut could arrive at home to newly-promoted Championship side Wycombe in a Carabao Cup Cup tie on Sunday.
Brentford travel to Birmingham on the opening day of the Championship season on September 12.
But Toney will be keeping an eye out for Posh results. The former Cobblers youngster said: “I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone at Posh for the last two years. I really felt at home there.
“They gave me the plat
form to get my career up and running again. Also a massive shout-out to the Posh fans becausetheystuckwith meeven when things weren’t going so good.
“I wish e ve r yone i nvolved at the club all the best for the coming season and I hope they get promoted.”
That won’t beeasywithout Toney who scored six goals in his last fourPoshappearances and nine in his last seven.
Brighton were the Premier League club to show most interest in Toney, but the Peterborough Telegraph understandstheynevermade a bid.
Scottish giants Celtic and Rangers were also heavily linked with Toney, but they both baulked at the fee.
