The Peterborough Evening Telegraph
Gentleman first and also a true legend
So many people in Peterborough count Tommy Robson as a friend. I can’t remember anyone who was quite so universally liked as Tommy. He was a great player and a Posh legend. But there are many legends of the game that don’t find their way into the heart of a community in the way that Tommy did. I have spent many great evenings in his company. Always kind and generous with his time, first and foremost Tommy was just great company, always ready to talk about the great game and his beloved Posh but also always a good listener. I remember at one of the Peterborough Telegraph’s Sports Awards presentations he spent a great deal of time with youngsters there, talking about their team, their favourite games, sharing some anecdotes... always ready to sign an autograph or pose for a picture. Over the years I’ve coached youth football teams and, often, struggled to convince some of the players of the value of sticking to a gameplan or doing a job for the team - Tommy was always ready with a one-liner or a clever way of explaining things that helped me hugely and whenever I ran into him he never failed to ask how the team was doing. I’m not alone in having great memories like this of Tommy - there are legions of people who will say the same in Peterborough and across the country.
Above all else Tommy was genuine... he liked people and people liked him. The PISA supporters group has launched a fundraising appeal for a statue. It’s the right thing to do. He was a football legend and a gentleman and friend to so many.
