It wasn’t the way anyone wanted it to end, but Posh legend George Boyd has played his last game for the club.

Like the other members of the fabled Posh ‘Holy Trinity’ - Craig Mackail-Smith and Aaron Mclean - Boyd found it hard to rediscover his best form when he returned to the club.

And a frustrating 15 months at Posh this time around came to an end this week when Boyd’s contract was cancelled by mutual consent - eight months early.

The move gives Boyd (34) the chance to find another club beyond tomorrow’s transfer deadline day. If he’d seen out his contract he would not have been able to play as he hadn’ t been included in Posh’ s salary cap squad which comes into effect this weekend.

Boyd wass one of the club’s highest earners.

Boyd issued a short statement to fans saying: “It’s with a heavy heart I’m writing this as me and Posh have mutually agreed to cancel my contract. I’m gutted it has ended like this.

“There has been a lot of frustration these past few months with not being able to play, but it was a fitting way to finish by scoring in myfinal game. It’s just ashameyoufans weren’t there to see it.

“This club will always be very special to me. I want to thank Darren Ferguson and D arr aghM ac Anthony for the opportunity tocomebackand play here again last summerand I have no doubt this is the season the club gets back to the Championship.

“A very special mention also to TommyRobson, aspecial man who will be so rely missed by us all! Stay safe and hopefully see you soon.”

Boyd started just 20 games following his return to Posh from Sheffield Wednesday in July, 2019. He hadn’t started a game since the FA Cup defeat at Burnley in January until playing against Fulham Under 21s in an EFL Trophy match last week.

Fittingly Boyd capped a splendid personal performance with a goal in a 4-2 win. It was a 76th goal in 323 Posh appearances overall for a player who was heavily involved in three club promotions before playing Premier League football for Hull City and Burnley.

Posh co-owner Darragh MacAnthony said: “Nothing butlove& respect for this club legend. Oneof(if not) themost important signings made in my period with the club. Goodbye for now legend.”

MacAnthony: ‘George wasmy most important Posh signing.’
