A memorial in tribute to Captain Sir Tom Moore is set to be created in Peterborough following his death on Tuesday.

There was an out-pouring of emotion across the country when his family revealed the news that the war veteran had passed away following a short battle with pneumonia and Covid-19.

Sir Tom’s fundraising efforts captured the heart of the nation during the first lockdown as he set out to raise £1,000 for the NHS Charities Together by walking 100 laps of his garden, last April, ahead of his 100th birthday.

His challenge struck a chord with the public and his efforts ended up raising a huge £32.7 million with donations from 1.5million supporters from across the world.

Prime Minister Boris Johnsin also announced yesterday that he would lead a national clap in honour of Sir Tom and health workers at 6pm.

In response, local artist Nathan Murdoch, who owns Street Arts Hire Ltd, says that he has been inundated with messages requesting a tribute to Sir Tom.

He said: “My phone has been going absolutely crazy, I’ve had so many requests from local people who want to see it, clearly the people of Peterborough want to see it and we are happy to deliver it for them.

“We actually had plans for a mural last April, we had found a central location in the city but the quality of the wall was not upto the standard required and we didn’t know how long it would last so unfortunately that didn’t happen.

“Our first choice location would be either at the hospital or somewhere nearby and I know that many staff members support the idea. I’m currently speaking to a few contacts there to see if something can be agreed upon and when it would be safe to do so.

“I’m confident that it will happen and of course the NHS will have first refusal on the location of the tribute.”

Nathan’s work can already be seen throughout the city, his anti-racism mural gained worldwide attention in July. He has also created a tribute to The Prodigy singer Keith Flint and recently he helped transform the underpasses at Cuckoo’s Hollow with stunning scenes of wildlife.
