Wembley win for Gill
Posh fan Jordan Gill outclassed the toughest opponent of his career to keep alive hopes of a world title fight in the future.
The Chatteris fighter delivered a classy 10-round display to win a unanimous points verdict over rock hard Mexican Cesar Juarez at the Wemley Arena.
The three judges scored the WBA International Featherweight title fight 98-92, 98-93 and 96-94 as Gill extended his career record to 26 wins and one defeat.
Gill now hopes he can arrange a fight at Posh’s Weston Homes Stadium. He turned up to a pre-fight press interview wearing a Posh shirt.
“I reckon I’m a win or two away from selling out Peterborough,” Gill, who fought in front of a big crowd at the East of England Arena in 2019, said.
“Cesar provided the toughest fight of my life. He was so tough. Honestly these Mexicans are no joke.
“They fight to the end and they don’t like losing.
“He tried to exert a lot of pressure. He asked a lot of questions of me and I feel like I dealt with them in pretty good style.
“I didn’t feel my best in there, but when you’re stepping up the levels, you’re always going to feel like that and I’m pleased to get the win. Now I can move onto bigger and better things.”
Gill looked a little sluggish in the early moments of his first fight since August 1, but he stayed calm and gradually took control over a former world super bantamweight title contender.
Gill had occasional anxious moments in the fifth round as Juarez found his punching range, but his fast feet found a way out of trouble.
Knowing he was comfortably behind Juarez went looking for the big bomb towards the end, but Gill was too quick and too elusive.
The 26 year-old should now receive an official world ranking which will move him closer to the world title shot he craves.
Gill has fought back well with three wins since losing his only professional fight to Enrique Tinoco in May 2019.
