Date set for STEM challenge in city schools

Pupils from Peterborough primary schools will go head to head in the city’s second annual STEM tournament.

Sponsor Whirlpool Corporation has announced its Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge Peterborough tournament will now take place virtually on June 22.

Over the next three months, teams from across primary schools in Peterborough will come together to work on a series of tasks designed to enhance their technology skills, all culminating in a one-day virtual tournament jam-packed with robot matches, project presentations and STEM-based fun.

For its Peterborough tournament, Whirlpool Corporation is offering 15 fully funded places to primary schools, including the provision of a LEGO robot.

The theme this year is RePLAY, which focuses on the importance of play and being more active. Students are challenged to develop a number of key technology and life-based skills through the four competition components: the Robot Game, Robot Design, Core Values and the

Innovation Project.

Ian Moverley, Public Affairs Director, Whirlpool Corporation, comments: “After a challenging year, we’re so excited to be able to bring back our FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge tournament in Peterborough! Last January, 10 local primary schools gathered together at our factory in Whirlpool for an incredible – if hectic – day of robotics and fun. While we will not be able to run the event in person this year, we are so pleased that children are back learning in the classroom and can get started on their robot programming and activityinspired projects.”
