There’s a huge game for Posh on Easter Monday when automatic promotion rivals Sunderland visit the Weston Homes Stadium for a crunch League One contest.
How did Posh fare in some of the other biggest matches in the club’s Football League history (excluding play-offs)?
1) May, 2013. Crystal Palace 3, Posh 2: A draw would have kept Posh in the Championship.The ramifications of this defeat are apparent now.
2) May, 2009. Colchester 0, Posh 1. Posh completed back-to-back promotions on a nerve-shredding afternoon at Colchester thanks to Charlie Lee’s goal.
3) March, 2009. Posh 2, Leicester City 0. Leicester were top of League One, Posh were second. Goals from Charlie Lee and Chris Whelpdale secured the points.
4) February, 1961. Posh 3, Northampton 0, 1961. The Cobblers were chasing Posh hard at the top of Division Four, but goals from Terry Bly, Peter McNamee and Ray Smith put them in their place in front of almost 20,000 fans.
5) May, 1974. Posh 4, Gillingham 2. The Fourth Division title decider won by goals from John Cozens (2), Jeff Lee (penalty) and Chris Turner.
6) April, 2008: Hereford 0, Posh 1. A Dean Keates goal secured victory and promotion at one of Posh’s biggest rivals.
7) May, 1978. Wrexham 0, Posh 0. Posh had to win at the home of the Third Division champions to go up to the second tier of English football for the first time, but were frustrated by a brilliant goalkeeping display from Dai Davies.
8) May 1990. Posh 1, Southend 2. It’s the final day of the Fourth Division season and Posh had to win to make the play-offs, while Southend had to win to be promoted automatically.
9) April, 1982. Posh 0, Sheffield United 4. More than 13,000 turned up at London Road to see in-form and high-flying Posh take on leaders Sheffield United. Posh were humbled and didn’t win again that season.
10)May1991.Chesterfield 2, Posh 2. Posh came from 2-0 down to secure the point that got them up from Division Four under Chris Turner.
