Candidates for key positions

-

The final candidate list for two senior positions in Peterborough and Cambridgeshire have been revealed.

Elections to be the county’s next elected mayor and police and crime commissioner are being held on Thursday, May 6.

The current mayor (and the first person to hold the role) is Conservative James Palmer who is seeking re-election.

The role of metro mayor is hugely significant as the elected person leads the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority which has swathing powers over transport, housing and adult education.

The mayor is responsible for marquee projects such as the new Peterborough university, as well as major road schemes, support for businesses and securing vital funding for the area.

Whoever is elected as crime commissioner will have authority over Cambridgeshire Constabulary.

The role is currently being held on an interim basis by Conservative Peterborough city councillor Ray Bisby following the resignation of Jason Ablewhite.

As previously revealed by the Peterborough Telegraph, the Green Party is not putting candidates forward for either role as it is instead focusing its attention on council elections which are also taking place on the same day.
