Steve Evans is not one for mind games. He really was as ‘terrified’ of the Posh front four as he suggested before bringing his latest club to play one of his exes.

He need not have been. Posh fired blanks at home for just the second League One fixture of the season as they slipped to a shock defeat, one that could yet have serious repercussions when the big third tier prizes are handed out.

Some team, one day, was going to punish Posh for starting matches so sluggishly so regularly and it was the Gills who managed it with a 14th minute strike from defender Connor Olgilvie after lines weren’t cleared following

one of many long throws into the penalty area.

Gillingham rarely threatened again, but they were also streetwise enough to create a bitty, niggly contest which restricted the superior Posh footballers. Chances did arrive, most notably midway through the first half when Reece Brown sent Siriki Dembele through on goal, but the gifted one didn’t even

manage to shoot never mind score.

And Dembele should have redeemed himself in added time at the end of the game when his skill created a sitter for substitute Ethan Hamilton which he managed to blaze wide. Sammie Szmodics rattled the crossbar with a great strike from 20 yards, but it turned into one of those nights.

Posh failed to score at home for just the second time this season.
