The Peterborough Evening Telegraph

Now that’s making a meal of it

-

It’s been a long time since I’ve done a restaurant review for the Peterborough Telegraph. Come to think of it, it’s been a long time since I’ve been to a restaurant!

Me and Mrs T broke our duck when we went out for a belated anniversary lunch.

Our destination was the Haycock in Wansford which is now home to Prevost the restaurant where Lee Clarke is the executive head chef.

For some time, Lee has been regarded by many as the best chef in town.

We first sampled his delights when he opened Clarkes in Lincoln Road and enjoyed wonderful meals there and in subsequent venues in St John’s Square and Prevost in Priestgate.

He has now moved again but something hasn’t changed and that is the quality of his food –in fact judging by last week’s meal, it’s got better.

Now, of course, this isn’t really a restaurant review (you can read one on page 77 of this week’s paper) but it was such a wonderful treat I can’t not mention it.

People who know me, know by upbringing and taste, I’m a bit of a meat and two veg man.

And when I see the descriptions of some of Lee’s dishes my first reaction is ‘I’m never going to like that.’

But such is his skill (he’s a top bloke too) I always do.

Dear old Yorkshire Mother who had to feed me for many years used to think getting me to eat spag bol was a triumph.

She wouldn’t believe it that Lee has me eating (and loving) a dish of carrot tartar, white chocolate and caviar!

I really hope Lee and his restaurant earns one of those coveted Michelin stars.

He deserves it and it would be a great boost for the city.

PS If anyone thinks I’m getting above my station with this fine dining you might like to know the next day my lunch was somewhat different – two microwaved Frankfurters (six days out of date)!
