In-form leaders are beaten after a fantastic contest

-

The top two in the Premiership staged a superb contest on the slick shale of the East of England Arena.

And it was Panthers who grabbed the glory of ending the nine-meeting winning streak of leaders Wolverhampton while confirming a spot in the end of season playoffs for the first time in over a decade at top-flight level.

The meeting featured another bumper haul of points from Hans Andersen at reserve, two race wins from guest Danny King and a superb last heat 5-1 for Andersen and Chris Harris which sent Wolverhampton home pointless and kept the race for top spot alive.

For much of the meeting the visitors looked capable of extending their winning run, but a strong finish instead delivered victory for Panthers.

The hosts had taken the lead with a brilliant Heat 3 5-1 led by skipper Scott Nicholls, and with Michael Palm Toft re-passing Nick Morris for second place.

With King opening up with two wins, the first of which was a fraction outside the track record, Panthers started well despite a Heat 2 fall for Jordan Palin when in third place .

Reserves Flint and Ryan Douglas were a major threat as the Wolves top-end surprisingly struggled, and after Morris defeated Harris in Heat 7 to narrow the gap to two points, Flint took the double scalp of Andersen and Bjarne Pedersen in the next race.

Wolves then turned the meeting completely when Morris and Luke Becker outgated King and Pedersen in Heat 10. Harris crucially won Heat 11 to keep Panthers within two points.

The home side came roaring back in a tremendous Heat 12 in which Douglas gated for the visitors only to be passed by Andersen and Palm Toft for a 5-1.

And the thrills continued in Heat 13 with Harris being outgated before flying past Sam Masters and then switching inside Douglas to win.

Heat 14 was shared, but in a stunning finale, Morris led before being passed by Andersen, who then took the line his opponent wanted. Harris found a narrow gap on the outside to join his partner for a 5-1 to the delight of a bumper crowd.
